Intel Pentium Pro - 1995         Intel Pentium Pro is a product in between Pentium and Pentium II targeted at Server applications; its structure is similar to a Pentium II without MMX support. Pentium Pro is the first Intel x86 processor with built-in L2 cache. Pentium Pro also supports multi-processor, but the stepping number must match for the CPUs to be able to work together. Pentium Pro was optimized for 32-bit applications, so it does not perform well on 16-bit applications. From this generation (P6), Intel started implementing Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) design into the core of their newer microprocessors. Although many of those CPUs sitll use Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC) instruction set, their cores have more and more RISC based architecture. When Pentium Pro was released, 32-bit OS has not yet become the mainstream; my first computer with Intel processor installed was a Pentium Pro 150Mhz, but it never got a chance to actually run 32-bit OS before I replaced it. The first Pentium Pro at the right is the 133Mhz version. A lot of people did not even know this version exists. In fact, this version is actually an engineering sample, so they did not even put on the "Pentium Pro" logo. Because this version was never officially released into the market, it is quite rare.
