The UK's only vegetarian cat?

Dante the rescued tom is a cat which is thought to be the UK's only
vegetarian cat - and turns his whiskers up at anything but organic fruit and
vegetables.

Dante refuses to touch traditional cat food of any kind in favour of "less
fattening" home-grown alternatives.

Current favourites include melon, bananas, broccoli, rhubarb, asparagus,
aubergine and Brussels sprouts, but he also has a taste for uncooked
potatoes.

The two-year-old is so insistent on getting his five-a-day that he even raids
the fruit bowl if he's feeling peckish.

Experts confirmed Dante's peculiar appetite was "extremely rare".

Maggie Roberts, director of veterinary services at the animal charity Cats
Protection, said: "This is extremely rare - I have never before heard of a cat
that will not eat meat.

"Cats are obligate carnivores, and cannot be vegetarian."

Dante was abandoned as a kitten and was found close to starvation in an
alleyway by owner Becky Page, 21.

Becky, a child minder, tried to fatten him up with tasty treats like chicken,
tuna, seafood and biscuits.

But she said Dante "wolfed down" a plate of leftover vegetables which had
been left near her kitchen bin.

Becky, who grows her own organic fruit and vegetables at her home in
Tasburgh near Norwich, Norfolk, said: "I tried feeding him meat, fish and
everything else cats usually like, but he turned his nose up at all of it.

"But just when I was thought nothing would work, I caught him wolfing
down a plate of vegetables that I was going to throw out.

"Since then, he won't go near anything fatty and prefers the things I grow in
the garden."

Becky, who lives with long-term partner Adam Carpenter, 26, added:
"Dante is part of our family and although we have lots of other animals he is
more human than any of them.

"He loves attention and loves being with us so the least I can do is let him
have his favourite foods.

"I admit he has a very, very unique appetite - but he's certainly healthy."

Sarah Medway, who runs www.craftycat.co.uk, a web site dedicated to cat
behaviour, said "I have never heard of a purely vegetarian cat. Nutritionally
cats need to eat meat to survive.

"Unlike some other animals that can live quite happily on a vegetarian diet
cats are natural carnivores and are likely to look and hunt elsewhere to eat
meat.

"There are certain nutrients that a cat needs that can't be obtained from
plant foods."

Mrs Roberts, from Cats Protection, added: "Cats Protection advises that
cats be fed a complete cat food, which provides all of the necessary
nutrients in the right balance."

Fox stands on hind legs like a dog
A retired GP has trained a group of foxes to stand up on their hind legs like
dogs and beg for food.

By Chris Irvine
Last Updated: 7:29AM 17 Apr 2009

Richard Lavelle is visited by the family of foxes every night and feeds them
scraps of turkey and ham.

He has managed to train up to seven of them, amazing animal behaviourists.

They are now so used to the meal that if he is out for the day they will sit
and wait patiently on his drive until he returns home.

Dr Lavelle, from Littleover, Derby, explained that the foxes began to visit
about five years ago.

"A mother fox had some cubs on some allotments at the bottom of my
neighbour's garden, so I started to offer them food," he said. "When the
mother died, the cubs kept coming, and now I am seeing the second
generation."

Grandfather and widower Dr Lavelle, 80, said he tried to teach them to sit
initially but when that failed he began waving the food above their heads
until they learned to stand.

He added: "They cost me a fortune in food but I just love them, love being
able to help them."

Neighbours are also happy as the foxes no longer dig up their allotments.

Nick Brown, of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, said: "The foxes are getting
regular food and it seems to be stopping them destroying the local
environment."

The RSPCA warned however against people training foxes. A spokesman
said: "They could easily become dependent on you, then what happens
when you move away?"

Cyber-ants go home hunting - April 22, 2009

Rock ants refuse to live in any old hole in the ground, and researchers from
the University of Bristol have been finding out how they choose between a
des res and a hovel.

Temnothorax albipennis have been previously shown to pick the better of
two potential nest sites even when it is nine times further away from their
current abode than the less salubrious residence. If ants decide a nest site is
a good place to settle down they often return to their soon-to-be former
home and recruit friends.

A nest is chosen by the number of ants in a potential nest reaching a
quorum, but most ants appear not to visit both sites, say Elva Robinson
and her colleagues.

They fitted micro-transmitters to every worker ant in nine colonies housed
in artificial nests. Each colony contained between 100 and 200 workers and
larvae. The team destroyed the ants' homes and gave them a choice of a
good, far-away site and a worse, closer site to move to. Chip readers on
both potential nests recorded ant coming and goings.

“Each ant appears to have its own ‘threshold of acceptability’ against which
to judge a nest individually,” says Robinson (press release). “Ants finding
the poor nest were likely to switch and find the good nest, whereas ants
finding the good nest were more likely to stay committed to that nest.”

This contrasts with previous assumptions that ants compare nests, the
team write in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Ant house hunting isn’t
perfect though, in this study only four of the nine colonies chose the
far-away, ‘good’ nest, with three putting up the 'home sweet home' signs in
the poor site and two splitting in half and moving into both.

Holly Township psychic reunites wind-blown chihuahua with her grateful owners
by Jill Blondin
Tuesday April 28, 2009, 4:59 PM

HOLLY TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- She just had a feeling, as psychics often do,
that the tiny lost dog was alive and well and wandering on higher ground.

Lavern and Dorothy Utley of Rochester believe that feeling, from Holly
Townshp resident "Lorrie the Pet Psychic," reunited them with Tinker Bell.
Their six-pound chihuahua had been missing since Saturday when a 70-mph
wind picked her up at a flea market in Waterford Township and literally blew
her away. Her owners, both 72, were devastated after volunteers combed
the area only to come up empty-handed.

On Monday, Detroit-area radio station WKQI (95.5-FM) got involved in the
search and contacted Lorrie, who had helped the station in the past. Lorrie,
who refuses to reveal her last name to protect her family's identity, said
she told the Utleys to return to a wooded area nearly a mile away from the
flea market and "look up."

"I had a sense she was alive and not hurt and told them to keep looking,"
Lorrie said.

Lavern said volunteers had previously searched a low-lying swamp at that
location, but not the hilly area behind it. As he was climbing those hills calling
his dog, Tinker Bell came running.

"She went nuts trying to jump into my arms," Lavern said. "She was all
muddy and dirty. She was worn out but she wasn't hurt."

Lorrie, a third-generation psychic who says she can communicate with
animals and makes her living as a pet psychic, said it's hard to explain how
she does her job.

"Every case is different," she said. "I can hear, see, taste or feel things ...
however the reading is going to come through. This one was visual. I
hesitated to say this, because I didn't know what it meant. But I told them
to keep looking up."

Lavern said they tried to give Lorrie a reward, but she asked that it be
donated instead to an animal shelter. Lorrie said she has pets and
understands they are members of the family.

Lorrie said she also has an ability to communicate with animals that have
died.

"I contact deceased animals to give people closure," she said. "Pets greet
us when it's our turn. They're up there waiting."

(Casey Anderson)

Grizzly bear is best man at wedding
Casey Anderson, a modern-day Grizzly Adams, picked a half-ton bear to be
best man at his wedding to Hollywood actress, Missi Pyle.

Apr 2009

Anderson 33, hand-reared Brutus from a cub after he was born into
captivity and faced euthanasia because he couldn't be released into the wild.

The pair have become so close that the seven-foot eight inch grizzly bear
was best man at his wedding to the 36-year-old actress.

Brutus, who weighs 900lbs (0.45 tonnes), stole the show at the marriage
in Swan Valley, Montana, where he ate the wedding cake in front of 85 guests.

Naturalist Casey, who lives in Montana, America, even admitted he even
owed his "best friend" Brutus for introducing him to his future wife.

He said: "When Brutus was born, it was a dead end street because he
couldn't be released into the wild so had to remain in captivity or be
euthanased.

"So I came up with the idea to rescue him and build a home to save other
grizzly bears and since then he's completely changed my life.

"I take him for long walks. I swim with him and I've even started teaching
him how to fish. I feel like his father in a way - but in reality I'm more of his
friend.

"Now I owe him for introducing me to my wife and he was best man at my
wedding - he really has changed my life.

"With other bears he plays rough but I'm not scared of him because when I
wrestle him he knows he needs to be a lot more gentle.

"He doesn't want to hurt the people that he loves and I think he does love
me after all the years and time we have spent together. He's my best
friend."

Brutus was born in 2002 at a rescue centre in Idaho, America, where he
was at risk of being put down because he could not be released into the
wild.

However, Casey, who worked at the centre, decided to look after him and
set up the Montana Grizzly Encounter, near Yellowstone National Park,
America.

Grizzly bears are renowned for being extremely dangerous but after
spending the last seven years together the pair have forged a close and
trusting relationship.

Casey and Brutus often eat, walk, swim and wrestle together, relax in the
jacuzzi and always celebrate their birthdays and Thanksgiving Day by eating
a meal in his house.

Brutus was best man when Casey wedded actress Missi, who starred in
'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Harold and Kumar Escape from
Guantanamo Bay'.

The couple met on the set of the film 'Pretty Ugly People', in which Missi and
Brutus co-starred.

Missi explained: "Casey runs a grizzly sanctuary; Brutus was in the movie.
We wanted Brutus as the ring bearer but the game-and-wildlife people
wouldn't let us."

Because Brutus was removed from his father at a very young age Casey is
now teaching the grizzly bear how to catch fish.

Casey added: "Brutus engages with humans in a way that other bears don't
because he is very intelligent and emotional. His personality is very gentle.

"He a very close friend of mine and I believe that he is much more intelligent
and emotional than a dog.

"He understands exactly how I'm feeling for example when I am sad he's
very sympathetic and even gentler towards me.

"To see these characteristics in an animal is an amazing thing and I think it's
important to educate people about grizzly bears.

"We're trying to cure the myths, educate the public. There's a way to
coexist with these animals as long as you play by the rules."

Wild dogs take Chewbilee Line
By VIRGINIA WHEELER

STRAY dogs are commuting to and from a city centre on underground trains
in search of food scraps.

The clever canines board the Tube each morning.

After a hard day scavenging and begging on the streets, they hop back on
the train and return to the suburbs where they spend the night.

Experts studying the dogs say they even work together to make sure they
get off at the right stop — after learning to judge the length of time they
need to spend on the train.

The mutts choose the quietest carriages at the front and back of the train.

They have also developed tactics to hustle humans into giving them more
food on the streets of Moscow.

Scientists believe the phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in
the 1990s, and Russia’s new capitalists moved industrial complexes from
the city centre to the suburbs.

Dr Andrei Poiarkov, of the Moscow Ecology and Evolution Institute, said:
“These complexes were used by homeless dogs as shelters, so the dogs
had to move together with their houses. Because the best scavenging for
food is in the city centre, the dogs had to learn how to travel on the
subway — to get to the centre in the morning, then back home in the
evening, just like people.”

Dr Poiarkov told how the dogs like to play during their daily commute. He
said: “They jump on the train seconds before the doors shut, risking their
tails getting jammed. They do it for fun. And sometimes they fall asleep and
get off at the wrong stop.”

The dogs have learned to use traffic lights to cross the road safely, said Dr
Poiarkov. And they use cunning tactics to obtain tasty morsels of
shawarma, a kebab-like snack popular in Moscow.

They sneak up behind people eating shawarmas — then bark loudly to
shock them into dropping their food.

With children the dogs “play cute” by putting their heads on youngsters’
knees and staring pleadingly into their eyes to win sympathy — and scraps.

Dr Poiarkov added: “Dogs are surprisingly good psychologists.”

The Moscow mutts are not the first animals to use public transport. In 2006
a Jack Russell in Dunnington, North Yorks, began taking the bus to his local
pub in search of sausages.

And two years ago passengers in Wolverhampton were stunned when a cat
called Macavity started catching the 331 bus to a fish and chip shop.

(Chris Murray)

Miniature pig and giant rabbit become friends
April 28, 2009

A miniature pig called William has found an unusual friend in a giant white
rabbit.

The pair have become best buddies at Pennywell Farm in Devon and spend
most of their time together.

Bosses at the farm attraction say the friendship developed after ten-week-old
William was moved into a pen next to the rabbits.

He instantly took a shine to floppy-eared Charles - who is double his size -
and now whenever they are let out, he follows him around.

Chris Murray of Pennywell Farm said: "To keep William the miniature pig
happy, he is given time out on the grass.

"When they are out Charles heads for a quiet spot in the sun and William
seeks him out and tries to play with him.

"The cheeky piglet seems to have no fear of something so much bigger
than he is and he will also help himself to any food that Charles has.

"William is far keener on the friendship than Charles but Charles is tolerant,
even when his food gets taken"

May 05, 2009

(The
Purina Animal Hall of Fame)。

(Sophie),

(Donna Perreault)

(Mary-Ann Lazurko)

Moo-vin' on up! Molly the Queens renegade cow lives to see Long Island

BY Lisa L. Colangelo
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
May 8th 2009

Molly the cow, once destined for a Queens slaughterhouse, is living the
good life on a farm in bucolic Suffolk County.

"She bolted out of the trailer when they got here," said Rex Farr, who runs
The Farrm, a 60-acre organic farm in Calverton, with his wife, Connie.

He said Molly is probably traumatized from her escape.

"She's going to be fine," Farr said. "Within a few days, she'll be eating out of
our hands."

The heifer grabbed headlines this week when she hoofed it away from a
slaughterhouse in Jamaica. She was rounded up after a romp through the
streets - police and animal control officers right behind.

She spent Wednesday night at New York Animal Care and Control's
Brooklyn shelter, where staff lined a large outdoor dog run with hay.

Her owner, no longer interested in the cow for slaughter, agreed to sign
Molly over to the custody of the agency.

AC&C contacted several sanctuaries and determined Farr's farm was the
best place for the runaway cow.

She was taken in an ASPCA trailer from the East New York shelter Thursday
to the tranquil farmland of eastern Suffolk County.

"Her life is going to be a lot better than it was 48 hours ago," said Joseph
Pentangelo of the ASPCA.

Now Molly shares space with her new BFF - a steer named Wexley. Her
neighbors include two rescued burros, more than a dozen goats, several
sheep and ponies.

No genetically modified feed on the menu. She will graze and be fed good
old corn.

The Farrs raise organic vegetables and eggs. They also grow grapes on the
sprawling grounds. In recent years, the animal lovers also turned their farm
into a sanctuary.

Farr promised that Molly's new life will be peaceful and stress-free.

"She's gone from being seconds away from becoming hamburger to living
on an organic farm," Farr said.

The only thing he will use from the cow is something she presumably will no
longer need.

"I'll use her fertilizer," he said.

What a twitter: The moment sleeping kitten is pecked awake by cheeky budgie who wants to play

By Daily Mail Reporter
09th May 2009

In the cartoon world, Sylvester was forever cweeping up on his would-be
supper, Tweety Pie.

But in the real world, it seems, there has been something of a role reversal.

In what could have been a fatal display of daring, the bird decided to leave
his cage and taunt his feline playfellow by reversing the normal pecking
order.

He hopped on top of the napping kitten, trying to attract his attention, but
the good-natured kitten simply ignored him.

Undeterred, the budgie continued to harass his sleepy-eyed friend until he
lazily opened an eye to see what was going on.

After being repeatedly pecked on the midriff, the kitten jumped up and took
a swipe at its tormentor.

Then as the cat gave chase, the budgie led it straight into his cage.

The antics of the two, whose identities are unknown, have become an
internet hit.

But this game between the unnamed animals may not last as the kitten
grows up.

Budgerigars are known to be very active, energetic, and lively birds.

They are originally from Australia and live on grains and seeds and have
never eaten cats. They grow up to 18cm.

In contrast, their feline friends grow up to 46cm in length and live on a diet
of commercial cat food as well as rodents... and birds.

Family Raises Wild Boar Piglet with Pet Dog

Who says you can't teach a young pig new tricks -- or even how to
bark?

Manni, a wild boar piglet, was found abandoned and starving in a
field near Ehringhausen in rural southwestern Germany. The lucky pig
was adopted by the Dahlhaus family, who bottle-fed him back to
health.

"When Manni was found he was very skinny," Wilhelm Karl Dahlhaus,
a fireman by profession, told the mass circulation daily Bild. "But he's
coming along nicely now."

The family also introduced the perky porker to their Jack Russell
terrier Candy. It turned out to be a match made in hog heaven.
According to Dahlhaus, "the pair play together every day. They play
hide and seek, romp around in the hedges and bushes and just have
a lot of fun together." Apparently Manni, who is now five weeks old,
is even figuring out how to communicate with Candy -- he's learning
to bark.

Animal lovers need not fear about Manni's long-term future. Although
Dahlhaus is an amateur hunter, Manni isn't destined for anyone's
dinner plate: This little pig will either stay with the Dahlhaus family
or end up living happily ever after in a wildlife park.

The Story Behind SB’s Dog, Cat and Rat Man
by Emilia Dellemonico

If you’ve ever spent time on State Street, you’ve probably seen some of
the unusual people that hang around down there. But there’s something
even more unusual, and considerably more meaningful, than your run of the
mill beggars, tourists, and street entertainers. It involves interspecies
cooperation, and is known by those who have seen the popular youtube
video about it simply as the man with the dog, the cat, and the rat. In
reality, this astounding street act is more than just an act, it’s an authentic
portrayal of love and acceptance across all boundaries.

Meet Gregory Pike and his furry entourage: Booger, Kitty, and Mousey.
Every day he walks around State street with Booger, the dog, on a leash.
On top of Booger sits Kitty, who holds on to the harness around Booger like
a saddle. On top of Kitty sits Mousey (who is really a rat), wrapped closely
around Kitty’s neck. Its obvious the bond between these animals is deep –
they all accept one another as members of the same family, regardless of
their species. Greg has been spreading this message of peace, respect, and
tolerance for eight years, and has become an integral member of Santa
Barbara society, known and loved by our community.

Hailing from a small town in Colorado, Gregory Pike has been studying
animal habitats and psychology for about 30 years. He has worked with
animal rescues and rehabilitation centers for mountain animals, and has a
diverse background in animal training.

“I’m a legend in my own mind,” he jokes, as he explains how his interspecies
group came about, “If it ain’t been done before, I’m gonna do it. As long as
it’s humane.” It all started about nine years ago, when “Someone said it
couldn’t be done” – no one believed a dog, cat, and a rat could all become
best friends. Greg simply had to prove them wrong.

“The dog raised the cat — I used her gestatation period to raise the cat like
a puppy. She chose Kitty from the litter, so she thinks it’s her baby.” The
cat was then raised around all sorts of small animals, and treats the rat as if
it were its own sibling. With the rat, “it’s all about food.” Rats, it turns out,
are very open to interspecies pairing, as long as they aren’t threatened and
are properly taken care of. While it seems odd for the cat and rat to be
stacked on top of the dog, Pike explains that it is the animals “safety zone”:
It is where the cat and rat feel most at home and protected by their
surrogate mother. Of course, it also helps Pike and his pals walk around a
little faster, as well as avoid possible rat or cat tripping incidents.

“I understand animals and why they do things. I understand some of the
barks, and the meows, and what the different ways they do it mean. I’m
not a Doctor Doolittle, but I know what they’re asking for.” Not surprisingly,
Greg also has some insights into what makes people tick as well, and with
his act hopes to be able to catch the attention of people to pass on his
messages of peace and humanity to the human species.

“Animals are simple, people are complicated. People wanna see something
different, something unusual, something cool. But there’s gotta be a
message behind it.”

Pike’s message comes from the simple reality of what he and his animals
have accomplished together. It proves that all animals, regardless of their
most vicious tendencies towards each other, can be kind and caring toward
one another. Obviously these animals are able to do something we humans
simply have not completely managed to do.

“Peace can happen anywhere — if they can do it why can’t people? You
know, they’re just ‘dumb’ animals, but now, who’re really the stupid ones?”

While currently residing in Santa Barbara, he hopes to someday soon open
up and run a free pet adoption and rescue center. This is one of the main
reasons why he keeps a can out for money. Eventually, the money will be
going to help wild animals and pets, as well as bring animal shelter issues to
the attention of more people in America. In his hometown of Telluride,
Colorado, the non-euthanasia, regulated adoption policies have worked so
well there are never any strays left in their shelter for long periods of time.

“In Bakersfield thousands of animals a month are put down. A thousand
animals a month, that’s ridiculous,” Pike says noting that it costs cities
thousands of dollars a month to pay for euthanasia of animals, when they
could be making money for shelters through adoption and more effective
advertising of animals in shelters. But even with such extraordinary goals,
he refuses to accept money if it seems burdensome upon others, stressing
that its more important to spread the thought of a friendlier, more tolerant
world than to make money.

“I do survive on what I get, but I don’t want it to be about the money.
When I see people digging for money, I tell them, if its that much work, I
don’t want it. I don’t want you to work for me; I just want you to come up
and take a picture and enjoy this. The message is always more important.”

With the help of friends, Greg is planning a website (coming soon at
www.thedogcatrat.com) which will become the main source of income for
his free animal rescue, shelter, and training center. He is also currently
looking into hosting a radio show on local Santa Barbara radio station KTYD
(99.9FM) to go further with his plans. He hopes to start the program in his
home state of Colorado, and through his successes spread the ideas of
more humane treatment and non-kill shelters for animals into other states,
as well as to give kids a chance to visit with him and learn more about the
love possible between all species.

But for the moment, Greg will continue his daily trips down State Street,
bringing his amazing animal trio with him and letting people stare
dumbfounded at what he has accomplished. When it comes down to it, it is
the simple pleasure of bringing something different and meaningful to people
that keeps him going, regardless of how much money gets thrown in his
cup by the end of the day. Clearly, this man is no longer just a legend in his
own mind.

Toddler Emily and baby orangutan Rishi monkey around together

In a crawling race across the grass they're evenly matched. But Emily Bland
will need a little practice before taking on her new friend at tree-climbing.

The little girl, two, met one-year-old orangutan Rishi at an animal centre
while visiting with her father. They took to each other straight away and
spent hours tumbling about and having a tea party. Emily poured while
Rishi waited patiently, gripping his spoon in a hairy fist. The pair then settled
down for a quiet cuddle before it was time for Emily to leave.

It was reminiscent of the scene from the 1967 Disney classic The Jungle
Book, when the monkey 'King Louie' tells Mowgli: 'I wanna be like you.'

Emily's father Barry Bland, 38, a photographer, said: 'I had come along to
the institute to photograph Rishi and I thought it would be good to bring
Emily.

'Almost as soon as we arrived, Rishi had an instant chemistry with Emily.
They looked completely content with each other.' The friendship came as
no surprise to those in charge of Rishi's home, The Institute of Greatly
Endangered and Rare Species (T.I.G.E.R.S) in Miami.
