小北極熊超人氣 柏林動物園 股價飆漲

德國的小北極熊可努特（Knut)熱潮方興未艾，不但吸人氣，也能創財運。出生就被
母親棄養、轉而讓柏林動物園人員撫養長大的小北極熊可努特已成了全球的人氣熊，可
努特更為他的家柏林動物園帶來財運，促使柏林動物園的股價在兩天之內急漲一倍多。


現在德國最紅的就是三個半月大的可努特，他於上周正式成為柏林動物園的鎮園之
寶，柏林動物園將Knut登記為該園的正字商標，此舉也引燃了柏林動物園股價漲勢。

柏林動物園在柏林交易所掛牌，平時交易量很小，其股價一般在兩千歐元（新台幣
八．八萬元）上下；但本周伊始就大漲，周二已衝上四八二○歐元，締造六年來新高。

柏林動物園自從開始讓可努特和民眾見面，遊園人次就暴增。可努特目前一天只露臉
兩小時。 柏林動物園的經理烏力希表示，他們之前從未想過要把一個動物的名字登記成
商標，但這個嘗試是成功的，其過程出奇順利，僅僅兩天，一個全球性的商標於焉誕
生，而公司股價暴增。

柏林證交所董事華特認為，柏林動物園股價驟增無疑是因為投資人企盼柏林動物園的
財務狀況能有進一步改善。

可努特已經上遍全球的報紙和雜誌，他惹人憐愛的模樣也引發商機，業界爭相為他寫
歌、生產絨毛玩具或製造以他的容貌為本的水果糖，這些公司也因此大賺一筆。可努特
並且登上著名的浮華世界雜誌，成為該雜誌三月號的封面人物。

在柏林動物園賣紀念品的沃慈表示，只要跟可努特沾上邊的東西都有市場，民眾也想
要有可努特的杯子和鑰匙圈，這樣的需求是很驚人的。

可努特出生於去年十二月，由於母親棄養他及其手足，動物園決定接手，結果在上個
月有動物權提倡人士出面主張動物園不應插手，經德國媒體披露之後，如此言論遭人撻
伐，進而使Knut成為鎂光燈焦點，這位動物權提倡人士之後出面澄清卻未受重視，反倒
是可努特成了人氣王。

Knut to draw a record number to Berlin Zoo

Knut seems blissfully unaware of all the attention during his two daily
appearances where the public can see him playing in his bear pit, drinking
milk and wrestling with his keeper, Thomas Doerflein.

The cub hit the headlines after animal-rights campaigners claimed he
should be put down because he was becoming too dependent on humans
since being left to die by his mother on December 5 last year.

Keepers rescued Knut and his twin and decided to raise them by feeding
them milk from a bottle. But only Knut pulled through after spending 44
days in an incubator.

The cub now weighs 12 kilos and the zoo is cashing in on his celebrity
status by licensing his name and image.

A deal was concluded this week with toymaker Steiff to produce a range
of Knut teddy bears in sitting, prone and standing positions that will sell
for between 11.95 and 30 euros (15.90-40 dollars).

There are other Knut souvenirs, such as posters and postcards, while
restaurants are offering "Knut menus" for children. A song has been
composed about the white, fluffy animal and poems have been written
about him.

Knut has also triggered a demand for the zoo's shares on the Berlin Stock
Exchange, where they were traded at 4,400 euros on Wednesday
morning, an increase of 83 per cent on the March 30 price.

Shares of the zoo's operator, Zoologischer Garter Berlin AG, were long
considered only of interest to zoo enthusiasts and were rarely traded until
recently. Only 4,000 shares are in circulation.

"I'm extremely pleased that people are showing an interest in our
shares," said Uhlich. "But it's the shareholders that will benefit, not the
zoo."

Knut makes his daily one-hour appearance in an enclosure normally used
by brown bears. The zoo says it has no plans to move him back with the
other Polar bears for fear they might trample on him.

"Many animals are threatened with extinction, even Polar bears. One day
the zoo will be the only place where you can see some species. That's
why it's good to have people like Herr Doerflein to raise a Polar bear cub,"
she said.

經去世。

Zookeeper who reared Knut found dead

THE zookeeper who hand-reared Knut the polar bear at Berlin Zoo has
been found dead at his home.

Thomas Doerflein, 44, was found dead on Monday. Authorities have yet to
rule on the cause of death, but a police spokesman said there was no
reason to suspect suicide or foul play.

Berlin Zoo confirmed Mr Doerflein was still employed but would not
comment on reports that he had been suffering from a serious illness.

Mr Doerflein rose to fame for his role in raising Knut after his mother
rejected him and his twin brother days after their birth in December
2006. Knut weighed 810 grams and there were concerns for his survival.
His brother died after four days.Mr Doerflein fed him on milk and porridge
for 150 days and Knut survived.

As the star attraction of the zoo, Knut brought in millions of visitors to
see Knut and Mr Doerflein in their twice-daily Knut show. The shows
stopped in July 2007 when the zoo's director ruled the bear had grown
too big.

Knut has since been diagnosed as a publicity-addicted "psycho bear".
Animal psychiatrists have called for him to be weaned from the spotlight.

Knut was not the only one to achieve international fame and the bearded
Mr Doerflein, a father of three, found himself a reluctant sex symbol,
receiving love letters and poetry from women of all ages around the world.

還記得去年柏林動物園爆紅的小北極熊「努特」（Knut）嗎？努特已長大了，不再是
隻可愛小白熊，但照顧牠的四十四歲保育員湯瑪士．多爾芙萊（Thomas Doerflein）
廿三日卻被人發現死在居住的公寓內，有人說他有病，也有人說他因與「努特」分離後
變得憂鬱，可能是自殺身亡。

努特的媽媽是隻在馬戲團表演的北極熊，名叫「托斯卡」（Tosca），她前年十二月生
下努特後，因不願照顧努特，加上生產後不久死了，失怙的「努特」何去何從引發德國
保育界的激辯，動物界人士甚至說不如終結牠的性命。

代理爸爸 照顧白熊無微不至

這時柏林動物園保育員多爾芙萊跳出來，說他要幫忙照顧「努特」。多爾芙萊每天泡奶
奶餵牠，用嬰兒油幫牠按摩，甚至放「貓王」的成名曲給牠聽，照顧得無微不至。多爾
芙萊的付出也獲得代價，努特跟他玩在一起，去年一月柏林動物園正式公開展示
「努特」時，在鎂光燈與鏡頭下，世人看到牠與他親密模樣，用「繼父」、「代理
爸爸」等詞來稱呼多爾芙萊。

那一波「努特熱」至少讓柏林動物園賺進一千萬歐元，到柏林的觀光客都不忘帶隻毛茸
茸的努特玩偶回家當紀念品；德國聯邦鑄幣局甚至發行兩萬五千枚以努特為肖像的紀念
銀幣；柏林的報紙也向讀者推銷一隻一百四十八歐元的努特瓷偶；連美國好萊塢電影
公司都來拍努特，將於本周起在德國上映。

太過親密 園方強迫雙方分離

多爾芙萊育有三名子女，為了照顧努特，犧牲家庭生活。他住在動物園，每天與牠一起
睡覺、吃飯，早上幫牠清掃籠子，晚上就像抱嬰兒一樣哄牠入睡。

多爾芙萊照顧努特十八個月後，今年七月，園方告訴他，因努特長太大了，擔心一起玩
耍會傷及他，禁止兩人一起玩耍。幾個月後，他再被禁止去探望「努特」，後來有傳聞
說，他因被園方認定與努特太親密，而與主管吵架。

今年初，德國動物學家警告，努特可能因為習慣於人類的注目與陪伴，以後可能無法與
其他北極熊過群體生活或是找到伴侶；動物園方也請專家鑑定，發現「努特」已變成
一隻「神經熊」（psycho bear），除了想念多爾芙萊以外，還對於人類漸漸對他失
去興趣感到不習慣。

不過多爾芙萊生前否認外界的推測，他去年接受訪問時說，未因飼養努特而對牠產生
感情，「牠又不是我的小孩，並沒有像我對我小孩般有觸發那種感覺，努特對我來說，
只是一隻動物而已」。

MYSTERY surrounds the death of the former keeper of the world's most
famous polar bear.German police said Thomas Doerflein, 44, had been
seriously ill, but had no further details. They would not say whether he
was found in the apartment of his partner or somewhere else.

Mr Doerflein raised the polar bear Knut by hand at Berlin Zoo after the
bear's mother rejected him at birth in December 2006.

Police would say nothing about rumours of suicide because he was parted
from his "son".

But it is widely known Mr Doerflein was bitter and sad at being parted
from Knut last year as their bond became too great for zoo officials to
tolerate.

An autopsy was to be carried out last night.

After extreme animal rights groups called for Knut to be destroyed rather
than be reared by hand, the bear's fame was sealed. Cute and cuddly,
Knut went on to become an animal superstar, on front pages around the
world, and the subject of a Hollywood movie.

Mr Doerflein, the father of two grown-up children and one of school age,
lived, ate and slept with the bear, cleaning him up in the morning and
cuddling him to sleep at night.

During his first Christmas, as Knut battled a fever, Mr Doerflein slept with
him and played him Elvis tunes on his guitar.

The bear identified him as mother and father, and Mr Doerflein basked in
the media attention.

But in July 2007 the zoo's director banned Mr Doerflein from playing with
Knut because the bear had grown too large.

It is known that Mr Doerflein was deeply upset.

Knut has since been diagnosed as a "psycho bear" missing his keeper
and addicted to celebrity. Many animal psychiatrists want him weaned
away from the spotlight altogether.

Berlin Zoo would not comment on Mr Doerflein's illness, citing privacy
rules.
