It's just 50,000 rooks chatting on the party line

The rooks in the picture were among some 50,000 who later flew
off to roost in woods near a railway line in Buckenham, Norfolk.

Professional photographer David Tipling captured the image.
He said: 'There may be record numbers here this year. Because of
the cold weather it is harder for them to feed, so it makes sense
for more of them to join the roost.

'It's an incredible sight - and the noise is extraordinary.'
Experts believe they gather in such large numbers to exchange
information on feeding sites.

(American
Association for Advancement ofScience)

Dolphins can be traumatised by swimming with people

Dolphins are too clever to be used as performing animals in theme
parks and should not be forced to swim with people because it
can leave them traumatised, according to experts.

The creatures have long since been thought of as the most intelligent
of animals and a new study has found their brains are second only
to humans in size.

Lori Marino, a neuroscientist at Emory university in Atlanta, US, will
tell the American Association for the Advancement of Science
(AAAS) conference their high intelligence means they can suffer
psychological problems linked to being captured and confined.

Dr Marino said: "Our current knowledge of dolphin brain complexity
and intelligence suggests that these practices are potentially
psychologically harmful to dolphins and present a misinformed
picture of their natural intellectual capacities.

"Dolphins are sophisticated, self-aware, highly intelligent beings
with individual personalities, autonomy and an inner life. They are
vulnerable to tremendous suffering and psychological trauma."

Her research could raise questions for dolphin parks offering
interaction with the mammals, who have been said to have healing
qualities.

Disabled people have often cited the health benefits of swimming
with dolphins.

Mark Simmons, science director for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation
Society, said: "I do think we need to be very careful, not just
swimming with dolphins but also watching them from boats as well.

"We need to start to re-think how we are interacting with these
animals in the wild.

"One of the indicators of intelligence unfortunately is that they can
suffer in the same way we suffer."I'm quite sure they suffer in the
ways that are very similar to us."

New evidence reveals dolphins have the biggest brains in the animal
kingdom.

Dr Marino said: "Many modern dolphin brains are significantly
larger than our own and second in mass to the human brain when
corrected for body size."

She said the anatomical features of their brains showed a
"complex" intelligence.

Dr Marino's study in 2001 showed dolphins recognised themselves
in a mirror, a sign of self-awareness linked to superior intelligence.

Her latest work will be presented to the AAAS conference in San Diego.

Chickens peck fox to death in Britain

In a shocking incident, a British woman claims that a fox in her
neighbourhood was killed by her chickens.

Michelle Cordell said that she found the dead fox covered in blood
when she went to collect eggs on Saturday.

According to her, it was lying dead, next to a little side table she
kept in the coop. Though Cordell didn't witness the attack, she
thinks her chickens stunned the fox when they saw him coming in
through the hatch and then finished him off by pecking him to death.

Zebra snapped putting head in hippopotamus's mout

A zebra at Zurich Zoo appeared to be staring into the jaws of
death when visitors saw it nose to nose with an open-mouthed
hippopotamus.

But the hippo had no intention of having the zebra for lunch - it
was having its teeth cleaned.

The extraordinary sight was captured by photographer Jill Sonsteby,
from Jacksonville, Florida.

She said the teeth-cleaning session lasted 15 minutes and the
zebra came to no harm.

"The zebra was in the same enclosure as the hippo and its baby,"
said Ms Sonsteby, 34. "The hippo opened its mouth and let the
zebra in there to clean.

"Everybody was snapping pictures. It was so great to be there at
that moment."

Dangerous
The hippopotamus is regarded as one of the most aggressive
creatures in the world and has a bite that can cut a small boat in
half.

Hippos can weigh up to three tonnes and are the third largest land
mammal in the world. Although they rarely kill each other, hundreds
of fatal attacks on people in Africa have been recorded. Despite its
bulky frame, the hippo can outrun a human on land over short distances.

(San Juan Regional Medical Center),

San Juan Regional Medical Center
FARMINGTON — An unlikely patient walked into the emergency room
at San Juan Regional Medical Center on Saturday night.

Hospital staff and patients were surprised when the automatic
doors opened and a dog with blood on its nose and paw and a
puncture hole in its rear leg walked inside.

"The irony of the situation is the dog wasn't doing well," said Robin
Loev, animal control officer and park ranger. "He was drooling and
appeared to be sick."

Loev responded to the emergency room at about 9:15 p.m. and
found people gathered around the animal.

"The patients were giving him a cup of water when I showed up,"
Loev said.

The animal, a German Shepherd mix about 7 to 8 years old, did not
require veterinary care.

Loev couldn't find the source of the blood and it didn't appear the
dog was hit by a car. He suspects the puncture wound is from
another dog bite, but it wasn't significant enough to call the veterinarian.

Loev took the dog to the Farmington Animal Shelter, where it was
vaccinated and given water and a warm blanket.

"He's doing fine," said Patrick Jake, an employee at the shelter.
"Everything was minor. He didn't really need immediate attention."

Loev is thankful the dog was kept inside the emergency room until
he arrived.Often people chase animals back into the street, scaring
them and making it harder for animal control

Confused seagull that thinks he's a cat: Bird sleeps in pets' beds and eats their food
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 8:49 AM on 8th July 2010

After falling down a chimney and into a seaside home, Mr Pooh the
seagull was destined to become a very confused young bird.

The herring gull was adopted by June and Steve Grimwood, who
found him as a soot-covered baby in their fireplace - and now
appears to believe he is actually a cat.

The couple brought him up with their cats, providing a basket from
which he acquired a taste for Whiskas.

Three years later, Mr Pooh has left the family home, but only as far
as a nest on the roof with a female partner. And he can't resist
returning-three times a day for his favourite-food, announcing his
arrival by tapping on the door.

The Grimwoods, from Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex, found him
as a baby after he popped out of the chimney three years ago
covered in black soot.

Mr Grimwood, 52, said: 'His parents were long gone so we looked
after him in the garden for a few days. We have three cats and at
first they were a bit wary of him but after a week or so he was
eating cat food out of a bowl with them. 'I think he thought he was
a cat.'

June Grimwood, 50, said: 'He comes to visit three times a day for
breakfast, dinner and tea and makes himself known by pecking on
the door to come in.

'He also knows the sound of the fridge door opening and he'll come
in for that as well.

'He's just like another pet in the family and even comes when he is
called.'

Dog raises alarm by honking horn
By STAFF REPORTER

A BRAINY dog trapped in a baking-hot car honked the horn until he
was rescued.

The pooch panicked after the vehicle heated up to 32C (90F) and
realised he had to get out.

So clever Labrador Max pressed the horn with his paw until help
arrived.

Animal hospital worker Nancy Soares said the dog was in the car
for around an hour in eastern Pennsylvania, US.

His owner had gone shopping and forgot that Max was in the car.
She heard the horn after unpacking at home, but saw nothing
wrong when she looked out of the window.

But when it kept happening she went out to investigate and finally
noticed Max sitting in the driver's seat honking the horn.

She gave him cold water to drink and soaked him with wet towels
to cool him down. He survived after suffering a bout of heat exhaustion.

Lucky Koala Hit By Car Walks Away Without a Scratch
by Stephen Messenger

Not only is this koala bear one of the cutest animals on the planet,
it just may be among the luckiest too. Defying the odds normally
stacked against wildlife in an encounter with a fast moving vehicle,
this koala bear survived being hit by a car travelling upwards of 50
mph -- and miraculously, without sustaining any injury at all.

According to 9 News, the adorable marsupial was struck by a Ford
Falcon outside of Portland, Australia, and became lodged in the
vehicle's front grill. The driver, who was travelling at a fairly speedy
clip, assumed the full-grown koala had perished in the accident.

When the driver pulled over to assess the carnage, he found the
animal was in fact still alive, stuck in the front of his car just below
his licence plate.

The driver then drove another 10 miles or so to a local veterinarian
with the koala still attached to the car.

After carefully freeing the animal from the grill, vet Lisia Sturm
made a startling discovery -- the koala was quite alright.
