Cows 'Commit Suicide' Off Swiss Cliff
Posted by Desta Bishu
August 31st, 2009

(MYFOX NATIONAL) – More than two dozen cattle have
mysteriously fallen from a cliff to their deaths in the
Swiss village of Lauterbrunnen, leading some to wonder
if the bovines committed suicide.

The Daily Mail reports that in just a span of three days ,
28 cows and bulls plunged hundreds of feet and were
killed instantly.

"'We are investigating because cows growing up in the
mountains normally can estimate dangers and do not
plunge down cliffs," a police spokesman said. Rescue
crews flew helicopters into the valley to retrieve the
carcasses, which posed a pollution threat to the local
groundwater.

Cows are usually let loose by farmers at high altitudes
in the Alps so they can graze. Some occasionally do fall
to their deaths, but many agree that to have so many
fall in such a short span of time is unusual.

Locals speculate that recent thunderstorms may have
spooked the animals. But scientists dismiss the notion
that the cattle committed suicide. They said the more
likely explanation is that the animals were migrating in
huge droves in search of more food and tightly followed
each other one when they fell off the cliff to their deaths.

Last week more than 30 cows fell to their death off a
cliff into the Fresno River near Coarsegold, Calif.
Neighbors complained after the carcasses were left to
rot for more than a week.

Whistling feathers sound predator alarm

"Biologists have discovered that a species of Australian
pigeon has a secret way of alerting fellow birds to
predators — a 'whistle' emitted by flapping wings when
the bird takes off in alarm.

The crested pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes) is well known
for the abrupt metallic-sounding whistle that it makes
on takeoff. Many birds have the ability to make vocal
cries to alert other members of their flock, but this is
the first study to show that flight noise can also serve
as an alarm call."

Turtle whose front legs were amputated gets around with
the aid of furniture sliders
September 9, 2009

Make all the jokes you want about the ironically named
Lucky, the box turtle whose front legs were amputated
following what his owner believes was an attack by a
rampaging raccoon. Lucky won't hear you; he's too
busy skidding about on his furniture-slider "legs."

"In most countries, when a raccoon bites a turtle’s front
arms off in a vicious inter-species attack, that little
hard-shelled fella would be all out of luck, assuming turtles
understand the concept of fortune caused by accident
or chance and/or Billy Zane," Best Week Ever's Michelle
Collins quipped of Lucky's unfortunate run-in.

Pyne found Lucky seriously injured July 31. Lovey hadn't
been hurt in the attack, causing both Pyne and veterinary
surgeon Dr. Robert Jereb to speculate that something
-- perhaps a shell deformity or overly portly front legs
-- prevented him from being able to withdraw his legs
into his shell. Jereb performed surgery to remove what
was left of the turtle's legs, and Lucky was bandaged
and given a slew of medications to prevent infection
and ease his pain.

Pyne gave serious consideration to having the turtle
euthanized. "I was ready to let little Lucky go home,"
she told Sonoma County's Press-Democrat newspaper,
"but Lucky, he was not ready to give up. His eyes were
open, and he was shoving himself around on his two
back legs. He was not going to quit." Jereb, who'd
previously read about a tortoise whose similar problem
was solved with the aid of a billiard ball cut in half and
affixed to its shell, decided what Lucky needed was a
prosthetic of some sort.

After some deliberation, he decided on using furniture
sliders, doubled up in order to match the length of his
amputated legs and stuck to the bottom of his shell.
The solution seems to have worked, although the
casters may need to be replaced periodically. We bet
he won't be locomoting on a grass surface any time
soon, but Pyne says Lucky now ambles around the
house like a champ.

Who needs a golf cart when caddie is a llama?

For $40, these calm, friendly animals will accompany
you on a nine-hole run
Sept . 16, 2009

Mountain climbers. Livestock guarders. Long-range
spitters. And now llamas have a new distinguishing role
to add to their resume: golf caddy. Yes, for $40 the
llamas at Sherwood Forest Country Club will carry your
bags, accompany you on a nine-hole run and maybe
even channel their peaceful temperament into quiet but
unwavering moral support.

For many delighted golfers, the grass just got a whole
lot greener — literally. Because of their soft, padded
feet, llamas do not make marks on the green and
actually leave the courses with less damage than golf
carts.

* 2009-09-29
* 新聞速報
* 【中廣新聞/郭希誠】

Pictured: The glowing frog who wanted a light snack
and swallowed a Christmas bulb

James, who lives in Palm Beach, Florida, had decorated
his back yard with colourful lights after noticing that
frogs had worked out lights attracted bugs.

But one night he discovered that one of the little beasts
had bitten off far more than it could chew.

James, 29, said: 'A bug landed on the bulb and when
the frog went for it he got a little bit extra. 'I zoomed in
and noticed that the wire was actually going into the
frogs mouth, he had swallowed the entire light, he
wasn't sitting on it at all'

'I quickly put my dog back inside and grabbed my
camera, but I was convinced that he would be gone by
the time I returned but when I got back he was still
sitting there glowing away.

'I began taking a few pictures from about four or five
feet away because I did not want to scare him and make him move.

James, 29, said he feared the frog had been killed after
it ate the bulb.

He said: 'I figured that he must be dead and because
there was no fear of spooking him I got very close and
continued taking pictures.

'But after few minutes I noticed one of his legs had
moved, death spasm I thought for a second until he
repositioned his entire body.

Because the wire was still attached to the light, Snyder
was able to pull it gently from the frog’s mouth.

It seemed none the worse for its ordeal – apart from
instantly losing its glow

The tiny kingbird that took a piggyback on a predatory
hawk and lived to tell the tale

By Daily Mail Reporter
29th September 2009

How far would you go to get rid of an unwelcome visitor?

This is the moment a tiny kingbird decided it was time
to see off a potential predator circling his home.

In a bold move, the aggressive little bird launched itself
at the fearsome red-tailed hawk and sank its talons into
the larger bird's back.

The feisty kingbird attacked the hawk as it ventured too
near its nest, dive-bombing it relentlessly, before
jumping on for a piggyback, clinging to it as it soared
through the air.

It enjoyed the ride for a few seconds before resuming
the attack, pecking the hawk's head in fury.

The hawk, which is typically up to 50 times bigger than
the kingbird, was powerless to shake its rider off and
shrieked until it finally flew away to look for easier
pickings elsewhere.

The incredible moment was captured by amateur
photographer Pat Gaines, 41, at Bonny Lake park in
Colorado, United States.

Pat, who lives in Denver, Colorado, said: 'I've never
seen red tail hawks harassed so much - the hawks I
saw were constantly being chased by a variety of
smaller birds.

'This kingbird perched between the wings on the hawk's
back for several seconds, and pecked at its head as the
hawk flew away screaming.

'Red tail hawks are known for their piercing, iconic
scream and the hawks I heard at Bonny Lake sounded
hoarse - like they were all screamed out.

'It is common to see smaller, faster birds dive-bombing
and harassing hawks, but this is the first time I've seen
one ridden bareback.'

A member of the flycatcher family, the kingbird is
known for defending its nest area very aggressively,
pluckily driving off unwanted intruders, including hawks.

'Interestingly, their genus name is Tyrannus, which also
may refer to this type of behaviour.' said Pat.

'Western kingbirds weigh about 1.3-1.6 oz, whereas
red tail hawks are about two to four pounds, so the
little kingbird is beating up on a hawk that is about 20 to
50 times its size.'

(Tillamook)

fully trained artist … He takes the paint-brush mouth
piece and will approach the canvas and begin painting
on the simple command of ‘paint’.”

Of course, Sam isn’t the only dog getting gallery shows.
Remember Tillamook Cheddar? Tillie the Jack Russell
just had exhibitions in Ottawa, Ontario, and Hollywood, Fla.

Super Creepy Cyborg Insects Will Soon Spy On You

Pentagon has been working on a special type of
technology that would turn bugs in to something that
would really live up to the multiple meanings of bug.

Okay, I will give it to you straight – they are working on
something that’ll turn normal bugs in to remote
controlled ones that can be controlled, erm…remotely
and flown like a toy helicopter. Like I said, it is not just
creepy, it is super creepy.

Scientists at University of California, Berkley have
actually accomplished this task. They have successfully
attached tiny electrodes and other electronic parts on
to living insects. Through these implants, the bug can
now be maneuvered through a laptop.

The engineering principle behind is not very difficult to
understand. Since we human beings can’t exactly
one-up nature on engineering, this is a sort of hack in to
the system. It’s like installing a malware that takes
control of your computer and then the malware creator
manipulates your system through the implant.

The bugs are implanted with the electronic parts at the
pupal stage or around the time when they retreat inside
the pupa. This way, they actually grow up with parts
implanted in them. Then when they are fully grown and
take flight, the electrodes transmit electrical pulses in to
their nervous system and muscles. So in case the
controller wants the bug to veer left during flight, the
electrodes charge the left muscles to make them work
harder and the body turns left. Is it is just me or does
this sound eerily similar to the way human beings were
controlled in The Matrix?

'Canine CPR' dog saves owner’s life, nominated for medal

This is one way of reforming the health system: In 2007,
dog’s owner collapses, dog barks and jumps up and
down on the owner’s chest. Owner revives enough to
call for help. Result: paramedic pooch does most of the
work, owner alive and well.

The Australian cattle dog received the RSPCA animal
achievement award and is to be nominated for the
Purple Cross, the RSPCA's highest award for bravery.

Anyone who knows working dogs will know that they’re
usually brighter than most humans, and have better
reflexes, but this is a new one. The Doggy Defibrillator
may well be the way for cash strapped paramedic units
to go.

The dog, Teka, apparently did exactly the right thing by
rousing her owner. Doctors have since advised Mr.
Touzeau he would have been dead, if not for Teka’s
efforts. Mr. Touzeau said Teka was “really pounding” his
chest, which most people would recognize as one of
the methods used by doctors as a heart starter.

Either this dog’s been watching House too much, or dog
owners have been right all along, and they know when
there’s a problem. This was hardly a simple situation.
When Mr. Touzeau collapsed in his factory he also cut
himself severely, so even by basic medical standards
this was no minor event.

Apparently the old “licking the owner’s face” routine
wasn’t on Teka’s mind. There are any number of ways
a dog can react to a sick owner, and CPR was evidently
the preferred option. The accepted theory in dog circles
is that humans change smells when sick, so apparently
the prescription called for CPR.

“Dumb animals?”

There’s no such thing.

Zookeepers' plea for help over bald animal mystery

Two Spectacled Bears called Dolores and Lolita have
gone almost totally bald, and their keepers do not know
why.

Staff at Leipzig Zoo in Germany have contacted their
peers around the world to ask if any of them have seen
the phenomenon and can offer a solution.

The balding bears have lost their fur as the freezing
German winter approaches.

The usual appearances of the creatures has prompted
widespread speculation in the country as to why it
might have happened.

It has also drawn hundreds more visitors than usual to
the zoo, in the eastern German city.

This is not the first time that a zoo animal has lost its
hair.

In 2005, a baboon called Reggie had to grow back the
hair on his head after his mother exercised her tongue
too enthusiastically on his scalp and made him bald.

Reggie, who lives at Paignton Zoo in Devon, was named
after the gangster Reggie Kray.
