Oct. 13, 2013

Woman shares home with FIFTY skunks - and says they are 'wonderful, beautiful animals'

With their reputation for causing a stink, the skunk may seem like the most
unlikely pet. But Deborah Cipriani keeps 50 of the animals in her own home.

The 55-year-old, from North Ridgeville, Ohio, runs America's only rescue
centre for domestic skunks.

And they are given free reign of the five-bedroom home – even sleeping
on Deborah’s bed.

Deborah, who is a customer service worker, said: “A lot of people think
we’re weird to like pet skunks and they always say "Why do you want a
pet skunk" and I ask them “Why do you want a pet dog?"

"It’s the same reason - skunks can be lovable, devoted animals."

She added: “I have a lot of skunks in the house, they’ve all got different
personalities.

"Some are nice, some are not. Some want to sleep on the bed, some don’t.

"But, no matter what the issue is, we treat them all like family.”

Deborah, who lives with partner Kevin, 51, bought her first skunk in 2000
to help her through the death of her mother.

Since then, she’s become so attached to the animals that she’s dedicated
her life to caring for them – getting up at 4.30am every morning to make
sure they’re all fed in time.

She said: “I have to get up early to start the daily routine of feeding and
cleaning every single skunk in the house - that takes three hours alone.

"I then go to work and when I’m home at the end of the day the routine
starts all over again.

"It’s tiring but it all the running around has actually made me much healthier.
If I didn’t have so many skunks I wouldn’t be so limber and so energetic."

Since 2000, her home, called Skunk Haven, has become well known throughout
America and she even has fans in the UK, France and the Netherlands.

Deborah has even set up her own event – called Skunk Fest – which attracts
fellow animal lovers from all over America every September.

The bizarre day includes a beauty pageant for skunks and even an award
for ‘best dressed’.

Doting owners walk their pets around on leads – and some even push them
in prams.

Deborah said: “The Skunk Fest is awesome. What we want to do is help
the public see skunks in a different light.

"The animals have a bad reputation because of their smell but what we
want to do is change perceptions.

"Because skunks aren’t the smelly little creatures that people think they
are – they’re wonderful, beautiful animals."

She added: “I feel that I was chosen to help the skunks and I will keep
doing this and I will own skunks until I die."

Indian elephant eats Australian bridesmaid at Thailand wedding

WELL that wasn't supposed to happen. An Indian elephant making a surprise
appearance at an Australian wedding in Thailand has tried to eat a bridesmaid.

The three-year-old elephant, a special guest at the beachside wedding in
Phuket, took one look at the Melbourne woman before wrapping its mouth
around her head.

"She was a little bit embarrassed but they were all pretty laid back, being
Aussies. It wasn't a prim and proper sort of day."

Thankfully the elephant wasn't brought in to mingle with guests until cocktail
hour, meaning the bridesmaid didn't need to redo her hair or makeup.

"It was after the ceremony so everyone was getting pretty relaxed by that
point," Sydney-based Joffe said.

(Plainfin
Midshipman),

SEX CRAZED FISH keeping hapless Southamptonites awake
Fishy explanation for night-time sonic attack
By Lester Haines, 25th October 2013

Experts have suggested that a night-time humming keeping residents
along Hampshire's Southampton Water from their kip may be the result of
randy fish.

Bleary-eyed people living close to the estuary have complained of hours of
persistent throbbing, kicking off at 10pm, the Telegraph reports.

While some sufferers sought medical attention for possible tinnitus, or
demanded sleeping tablets from their doctor, New Forest District Council
and the Environment Agency responded to over 30 complaints by launching
a fruitless investigation.

According to the association's Dr Ben Wilson, the humming could be the
result of fish seeking a mate. He said: "It's not beyond the realms of possibility.
There are certainly 'sonic fish' in the north Atlantic and the approaches to
the English Channel.

A plausible culprit is the male Midshipman fish, which uses its swim bladder
to vocalise a call to females. The shouty piscine is well known to those
living along the Duwamish Waterway in West Seattle, who've been suffering
the "kind of creepy" drone for some time.

Heartwarming photos of lioness hugging rescuers will make your day

When Sirga the lioness was a cub, two other baby lions in her Botswana
pride were killed — and she was abandoned without food. Luckily for her,
conservationists Valentin Gruener and Mikkel Legarth were working nearby
on their Modisa Wildlife Project, an initiative to save the lion population in
the region. “It happened on our land, and we could not stand by and watch
her die,” Legarth told the Daily Mail.

The two took her under their wing, keeping her out of harm’s way while still
allowing her to hunt in the wild for her own food and retain most of her autonomy.
The men have formed such a close bond with her that she’ll actually let
them come near her when she eats. Oh, and she gives them hugs, too.
“We want to release her to the wild eventually as a wild lion, not as one
that has met lots of people,” said Legarth. “That would be dangerous.”

Desmond Morris

The Polite Baby Dolphin Saved Says “Thanks” Before Swimming Away

The good news is not just the kindness and obvious ecological awareness
of the two men who did not hesitate to assist the baby dolphin, un-entangling
him from a plastic bag, but the heart melting part is the reaction of the
obviously confused but thankful baby dolphin who will live to tell of his
adventure.

Casual about the affair, the two men did not give up their pursuit to assist
the baby marine mammal in distress who was able to elude them at least
once.

Just as grateful as the baby dolphin calf, were the two men reacting to the
response of the baby dolphin after being freed, who hit the water, turned
and did a brief tail walk, like a happy dance with eye contact. Awesome!

(Keegan Vansoelen)

He's a big softy at heart! Yankee the giant St Bernard lets stray cats snuggle
up to him every night

They were originally bred to rescue mountaineers trapped in snow storms.
So it is perhaps no surprise this giant St Bernard also wants to help the
needy, albeit of a rather different kind.

For nine-year-old Yankee has been letting dozens of stray cats cuddle up
to him when he goes to sleep every night to shelter them from the cold.

Owner Keegan Vansoelen, 24, said the cats started coming over to the home
from a barn about a year ago and have never looked back. Mr Vansoelen
said: 'We discovered the cats sleeping on him one morning about a year
ago.'It looks like a big ball of fur. Many of the cats are the same colour as
Yankee's coat, so sometimes they are hard to see on him.'

The friendly pooch has taken to cuddling up to the cats every night to keep
them warm in a touching protective gesture. Mr Vansoelen said: 'It happens
quite a bit during the winter, as it can get pretty cold here. 'Even during the
summer they lay with him. I think they do it just to be close to another creature.'

Mr Vansoelen, a construction worker, said the friendly moggies will nestle
up to Yankee for as long as he will let them.'They'll sleep like that as long
as he lays still and doesn't get up,' he said. 'Most of the time he just lets
them lay and sleep on him. Every once in a while though he'll get irritated
with it and get up.'

Family asks for support after critically disabled boy's beloved dog threatened
by Breed Specific Legislation

The parents of a severely disabled boy are asking for support after breed
specific legislation threatens to take away their boy's beloved dog. Dylan is
10 years old and has lived in a vegetative state since birth. Dylan's parents,
Eckhard and Barbara Gerzmehle, care for him around the clock and machines
monitor his vital signs and health. Dylan is also cared for by his faithful
friend Tascha, a 6-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Every morning, Tascha goes to Dylan's room and gently pulls his blanket
aside. She then tenderly licks his feet and snuggles up to him for a cuddle.
Although Dylan cannot speak and cannot physically gesture, his family says
that Tascha's love effects him positively. They note that the machines next
to Dylan's bed always register a response whenever Tascha is around.

"Whenever the dog is with him, our son responds. He is happy," says Dylan's
father Eckhard, 59. "His breathing becomes quieter, his heart rate falls. That
could only be because of this dog."

But now the family is facing a terrible crisis. Tascha may no longer be able
to stay with Dylan and her family because of her breed. The Gerzmehles live
in Schonwalde, located in Brandenburg, a district northeast of Berlin, Germany.
The family moved to Schonwalde from Berlin to give Dylan a more peaceful
surroundings. His room is beautifully decorated and their home makes it
easier to care for Dylan.

Unfortunately, unlike Berlin, Brandenburg has dangerous dog breed legislation
that does not permit Staffordshire Terriers. Until recently, the district had
not objected to Tascha as she has been neutered, properly reported and
has received training from certified dog trainers. She also has passed temperament
tests. But due to an unfortunate incident involving the neighbor's dog, the
authorities are now enforcing the law.

While the family was outside of their home Tascha got into a fight with the
neighbor's dog. According to Erna-Graff-Foundation for Animal Welfare
(Erna Graff Stiftung Fur Tierschutz), the Gerzmehles paid for the vet treatment
for the injured dog and apologized for what happened. The dog is expected
to fully recover from his injuries. However, the Office has made it clear they
want to pick up Tascha and take her away. "They were already here several
times," Barbara, 49, said.

Now the family is seeking public support and legal assistance to keep Tascha
with Dylan. The Erna-Graff-Foundation for Animal Welfare is supporting
the family legally. Their Foundation Board of Directors said, "If necessary,
we will bring this matter before the Federal Constitutional Court."

Dylan's doctor also has spoken out for Dylan, saying the dog acts as a therapy
dog for the critically ill boy and strongly advises against taking Tascha away
from Dylan.

Visitors to the Rockhampton Zoo encountered a rare sight over the weekend
as a group of chimpanzees mourned the death of "Ockie", one of the zoo's
most beloved primates.

Ockie, or "Octavious", 38, had a heart condition and was found dead in his
enclosure surrounded by fellow chimps Cassie, Samantha and Holly, according
to zoo keepers.
The chimps were allowed time alone with Ockie's body before it was removed,
in order to go through a grieving process, keepers say.

Rockhampton Zoo co-ordinator Graeme Strachan says the chimps were
observed touching the body, apparently trying to wake Ockie up, and one
chimp even appeared to try to revive him using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

"They didn't want to leave him, and it's always a good idea for chimps to
spend a bit of time with the one that is deceased so they can kind of come
to terms with it," Mr Strachan said.

"So they were pulling on him and trying to get him to wake up, and even
Holly looked like she was trying to do CPR on him.

Dog robs store
By Will Lerner

Dogs are usually considered man’s best friend. But, as WHNS Fox Carolina
21 reports, sometimes they can go bad and turn to a life of crime.

A Dollar General store in Clinton, South Carolina was dismayed when they
discovered that they had been robbed. Manager Anastasia Polson told WHNS
that they noticed that pig ears, beef bones, and dog food and treats were
missing. The store has security cameras, so Polson went to see who had done
the deed. Turns out, it wasn’t a person, “Well, we had a shoplifting dog.”

Yes, that’s right, the thief was none other than Cato, a husky. The loveable
fella was taking his stolen merchandise to a nearby car wash and burying
the food in holes he dug up. So how did this happen? He slipped off the
leash of his owner, Holly Darden.

Darden told WHNS, “Police kept telling me this is the best arrest ever. I was
like, ‘Thanks. Thanks a lot.’” Yes, that’s right the police were involved and
even wrote up a report, which reads in part, “…spoke with the manager who
stated the dog would sit outside and wait for someone to open the door
and then he would take off inside steal a pack of dog bones and then run out
and bury the items behind the store…the manager stated at this time they
didn’t want to pursue any type of report or action against anyone.”

This pooch isn’t a first-time offender, according to Ms. Darden, “He's gotten
into Ingles. He's gotten into BI-LO. He goes to Pizza Hut. And he goes up
to Yo Cup which is downtown too.” Before he was returned home, Cato spent
a few hours in the pound. WHNS says its unclear if any fines will be levied.
We here at Odd News hope that Cato can be reformed and stop his crime
spree of Clinton businesses.

Guide dog saves blind man from train - then public raises over $100,000
so he can keep him

Cecil Williams fainted and fell on to the tracks - his black Labrador managed
to wake him up in the nick of time

A blind man was saved from certain death after falling in front of a New
York subway train when his guide dog woke him up with seconds to spare.

Brooklyn man Cecil Williams, 61, fainted on the platform and fell on to the
tracks, dragging his 10-year-old black Labrador, Orlando, with him.

Witness Ana Quinones told New York Post: "The dog was trying to pull him
away from the southbound edge of the platform, but his feet were on the
edge, he was wobbling, and the dog was barking.

"But there was nothing he could do once he was down there. He just sat
there with the man. He just licked the man’s face trying to get him to move."

Matthew Martin told the paper: "He was kissing him, trying to get him to move."

Williams, who suffered a minor head injury in the fall, said it was a miracle
that he survived after he awoke just in time and the pair rolled into a space
between the tracks.

"The dog saved my life. He tried to hold me up," he told reporters. "He gets
me around and saves my life on a daily basis.
